QUINTON, Ala. (WIAT) – One mother is speaking out about the wreck that landed her two young children in the hospital and their father in jail.

Christin Ray tells CBS 42 her estranged husband, Michael Chad Ray, got into a wreck Saturday evening with their four year old and six month old sons in the car.

“We’re going through a divorce. He gets the boys on the weekend,” Christin Ray said. “Saturday night around 7 o’clock I get a phone call from his current girlfriend, and she says that they have been drinking and that they got in a big fight, and she told him to leave. He took her car with my boys and drove up to Walker County.”

An hour later she says she got a call from a Walker County Sheriff’s Deputy saying that her children were involved in a serious car accident and were on the way to a hospital.

“They was both in the back seat — the 4-year-old was in his seat belt, the 6-month-old was in car seat buckled in — but the car seat was not buckled into the car,” said Christin Ray.

Christin Ray says the wreck happened near Towns Road off Sharon Boulevard where the vehicle left the road.

“When they wrecked, the 6-month-old was thrown out of the car in his car seat. He was ejected from the car,” Christin Ray continued. “That’s when the ambulance was coming and my husband, he thought it was the police and so he decided to run off into the woods and he left my kids behind,” said Christin Ray.

She says her children are not unscathed, but she is grateful they are alive.

“My 4-year-old he was cleared and discharged with just bumps and bruises. My 6-month-old, he was admitted in the neurology clinic because he had bleeding on the brain,” Christin Ray said. “They kept him for 24 hours and decided to release him under strict care and said that he’s so young that the bleeding should stop on its own and should drain on its own,” said Christin Ray.

Authorities say Michael Chad Ray is in the Walker County Jail facing multiple charges including DUI, reckless endangerment, and leaving the scene of an accident with injuries.
