CHILDERSBURG, Ala. (WIAT) – A history teacher in Childersburg is on a mission to help his students practice higher levels of thinking and problem solving.
Now it’s being made possible thanks to CBS42’s One Class At A Time grant program.
Jason Jacks’ group of 8th grade students at Childersburg Middle School will be learning about history in a new way.
“I just have such a great group of kids, and this is something that I thought would challenge them a little bit more,” Jacks said.
Jacks is using the money to buy students Mini-Q’s, which is a hands-on project for learning activities.
“[Mini-Q’s] include reading, writing and math,” he said. “Basically all in history.”
The program is pricey and was by no means in the budget, but Jacks can now afford it because of the $1,000 grant provided by the One Class At A Time program.
He says he can’t wait to put the money to good use.
“This activity forces the kids to work collaboratively together, so they’re going to be working together and they’re going to be working at different skills to focus on different things from different avenues,” said Jacks.
He hopes the program will put his students on a level above a textbook and computer classroom.
CBS42’s co-sponsors for the One Class At A Time project are Pepsi and America’s First Financial.
