One Class At A Time: Sumiton Elementary Middle School

One Class Sumiton

SUMITON, Ala. (WIAT) – Sumiton Elementary Middle School Assistant Principal Chris Stephenson created the club “Leaders By Example.” It’s a service organization that has students invest their time into the school and the community.

It’s easy to spot the young men who participate in the program, because twice a month they dress for success – a reason to walk taller through the school.

They participate in activities to promote positive attributes, like assisting teachers and community service projects.

“I wanted to give the guys an opportunity, because unfortunately, in today’s time, many of young males are not getting what they need at home,” Stephenson said.

Stephenson has plans for the group to take part in a hands-on project in the spring. Now, they’ll be able to do it, because Stephenson is this week’s recipient of $1,000 through CBS42’s One Class At A Time grant program.

He wants to continue giving Leaders By Example participants opportunities to make a difference.

“One day they’re going to have a career, and that motivation has got to be there,” Stephenson said.

CBS42’s co-sponsors for the One Class At A Time project are Pepsi and America’s First Financial.
