BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – For the first time in 30 years, the Alabama High School Athletic Association is expanding high school sports.
A unanimous vote Wednesday added a 7A classification.
The new classification will include the 32 largest schools in the state.
It’s a move that was made to fight a discrepancy between the top portion of the old 6A and the bottom.
There was a difference of enrollment of around 1,200 students.
The decision to create the new class will place an eight-team region in the Birmingham area and will hopefully level the playing field.
The new classification will cause a lot of trickle down effects. Homewood will move up to 6A, and Calera and Central Clay County will move up to 5A.
