BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — The Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) wants families in Alabama to be aware of the qualifications for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, or WIC.

Women who are pregnant, have recently given birth, are breastfeeding or are the parent or guardian of a child 5 years old or younger are encouraged to apply for the program.

The program provides women with access to food benefits for up to three months at a time for every qualified family member.

Women who participate in the program are also eligible to receive peer counseling and education on proper nutrition.

The ADPH says the program is back to its normal process of issuing food benefits. The program has been back on a three-month issuance since Nov. 1.

Anyone who is interested in applying for WIC must show a nutritional need and a limited income.
