BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Families have been stuck on roads and interstates for hours at a time over the past two days, many of them unable to make it home.
“I thought it was worth the try instead of spending the night,” said Juan Cortez.
Emergency crews, sand trucks and police are hard at work responding to hundreds of traffic accidents and trying to prevent even more.
Volunteers on four wheelers roamed the streets, armed with tanks of gas and bottled water.
Along the way, they made some critical rescues.
“We are taking people to hotels and wherever they want to go,” said Michelle Bradley.
Alabama Governor Robert Bentley has declared a state of emergency and is asking everyone to stay off the roads.
