Charge in 2014 Tuscaloosa capital murder case reduced to manslaughter

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) — UPDATE: Roderick Washington was previously charged with capital murder, but during a plea on Thursday, the charge was dropped to manslaughter.

Washington will be on probation for five years following a 20 year sentence.

ORIGINAL: Traffic was backed up for hours along I-20/59 in Tuscaloosa County, late Thursday and early Friday morning, after law enforcement responded to a crash and fatal shooting. Tuscaloosa Metro Homicide tells us there was a two-car crash at exit 100 in the southbound lanes. When they arrived, they found a 40-year-old Frederick Lee Blakely dead from a gunshot wound to the chest. Another man, 37-year-old Roderick Dale Washington Jr., was taken to DCH Medical Center with injuries related to the crash.

Based on witness statements and physical evidence, investigators have since charged Washington with capital murder with no bond.
