Yeast protein used in continued research of brain diseases

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) – When it comes to brain diseases, researchers tend to notice a specific, and currently irreversible trend: protein misfolding.  It has been recognized in Parkinson’s and ALS, for example.  At the University of Alabama, there are researchers currently working in partnership with the University of Pennsylvania on a way to possibly unravel those proteins by reprogramming a protein found in yeast.  It has worked before in some simple animal models, and that could be the first step in working towards eventually halting the progression of certain neurodegenerative diseases.
