BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Birmingham Mayor William Bell is working with local organizations to help the city more environmentally sustainable.
Bell met with environmental groups and other businesses at the Innovation depot in downtown Birmingham Monday.
They each talked about what they are doing to encourage sustainable living habits in the community and how to make that relevant to families.
Mayor Bell says recycling is just the beginning.
“We spend hundreds of thousands of dollars each year on old technology,” Bell said when speaking of Birmingham’s streetlight system. “We need to start thinking about how do we improve the lighting in our neighborhoods and save money at the same time. To that average citizen, all they want is a brighter community at night.”
Birmingham will organize a sustainability commission in 2014.
The group will write a plan for the city and educate families on how green living can help them.
