BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A bill to shorten tag renewal lines at the Jefferson County Courthouse in Birmingham was making progress through the Alabama legislature prior to the snow and ice that hit Alabama last week.
The bill would allow cities within the county to issue vehicle tags to people who are renewing them.
State Representative Paul DeMarco, R-Homewood, is sponsoring the bill.
He says it should be the key to resolving the backlog once and for all.
The bill passed the House of Representatives Jan. 23 and was supposed to be brought up in the Senate last Tuesday.
“We could not meet. The Senate was able to meet one day, but the House finally got a quorum on Thursday,” DeMarco said. “So we were able to get back to work on Thursday, obviously losing some legislative days because of the storm.
DeMarco says the tag renewal bill is expected to come up in a Senate committee this week.
Alabama lawmakers return to Montgomery Tuesday.
