TUSCALOOSA COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — Law enforcement officials in Tuscaloosa say a drowning that occurred Sunday was accidental.
Authorities responded to reports of a juvenile drowning Sunday around 8:30 p.m. off of New Asia Road.
Police say 14-year-old Jaylen Davis-Williams drowned while trying to swim back to shore after abandoning a boat.
Davis-Williams and another juvenile found a boat near the lake and pushed it into the water.
The two were out on the lake when they realized the boat had no paddles, and they began trying to navigate back to shore using their hands.
Eventually, both jumped out of the boat and began to make their way towards shore.
The other juvenile made it safely to shore, but Davis-Williams did not.
His body was located approximately 15-20 feet from the shore.
Police do not believe foul play was a factor.
