FULTONDALE, Ala. (WIAT) — Firefighters in Fultondale are charging up and getting ready for possible rescues on icy roads.
“Now that we’ve been through it once this year, we’re more prepared a second time,” said Sgt. Justiin McKenzie.
The Fultondale Fire Department has a truck now equipped with dropdown chains that wrap around the tires as the truck moves.
“It makes a huge difference when you have no traction,” Sgt. McKenzie said of the dropdown chains. “Especially in Fultondale, where we have so many hills, we need the traction to be able to get up and down them without wrecking our engine.”
Last week, the rescue unit received all new, all-terrain tires and four-wheel drive vehicles.
But the trucks are not the only things that are more prepared. The department’s firefighters are equally as prepared for what problems the winter weather may cause them.
So in the event of inclement weather posing a problem for Fultondale, teams can fight fire and not ice, if necessary.
