Shelters open across the area as winter weather moves in

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – With the threat of winter weather moving rapidly into Alabama, some places are opening as shelters.

The Red Cross has opened shelters at the following locations:

  • First Baptist Church of Jacksonville
  • The Oxford Civic Center in Oxford, Alabama
  • The Heflin Community Center in Heflin, Alabama

Additionally, the Salvation Army has opened has a warming station for residents, city workers or anyone in need at 108 Plaza Circle, near the Alabaster YMCA.

The shelter will provide hot lunch at 11:30 a.m. and dinner at 5:30 p.m.

Coffee is offered for free at the shelter and hot chocolate is available until 9 p.m.

Steele United Methodist Church will reopen its Red Cross shelter at 2 p.m., which is located off I-59 at exit 174 in St. Clair County.

The Red Cross has reopened its shelter at First Baptist Church in Gadsden, which is located at 235 South 5th Street.
