EPA to begin cleanup of North Birmingham communities

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — For years, parts of North Birmingham have been contaminated with industrial pollution in the air and the soil.

Now those areas are getting cleaned up.

On Feb. 17, crews with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will begin removing contaminated soil from hundreds of properties in Collegeville, Fairmont and Harriman Park.

The neighborhoods are EPA Superfund sites.

Crews will set up a staging area at the old Carver High School during the cleanup.

People who live in the affected areas are reminded to keep an eye out for trucks and heavy equipment.

The cleanup is supposed to wrap up in September.
