Some tornado sirens not functional in Walker County

WALKER COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — Ahead of the severe weather expected in Alabama, some storm sirens in Walker County are still not functioning.

As of Thursday evening, 14 of the 45 sirens in the county are working, which means 31 are not.

Walker County Repairman Bobby Jackson is working nonstop to get all 45 sirens back up and running as soon as possible.

He’s rewiring and regrounding at least eight of the sirens, which he says takes less than an hour.

In those cases, people stole the copper wiring from the sirens.

Other storm sirens with more complex repairs will take up to five hours of work.

Jackson is still waiting on specific parts for them, and residents are relieved.

Jackson says he has been working since January, but the last two winter storms slowed down the project.
