CHALKVILLE, Ala. (WIAT) – On Wednesday, February 19th, a seventeen year-old student of Clay-Chalkville High School was arrested for starting a fire in one of the schools restrooms.
Chief Deputy Randy Christian of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that around noon Wednesday, deputies responded to a report of the fire in the school. A toilet paper dispenser had been set ablaze, causing smoke damage to the restroom. When investigating the incident, a male teen was seen on surveillance entering and exiting the restroom around the time of the fire.
The student admitted to starting the fire, telling deputies his reason to do so was he, “wanted to see what would happen”. The student also admitted to flushing the lighter down the toilet. He has been charged with 1st degree Arson and has been transported to the Jefferson County Youth Detention Facility.
A custodian was transported to an area hospital for to be treated for smoke inhalation, and a teacher was treated on the scene. As a precaution, students were evacuated from the building.
The student’s name is being withheld due to his age.
