Arbor Day events in Central Alabama

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – Arbor Day is a holiday that is meant to encourage people to plant and care for trees.

In Alabama, the holiday is celebrated during the final week in February.

Some cities are holding special events to mark the holiday.

In Tuscaloosa, the City of Tuscaloosa Tree Commission is holding a tree giveaway on Saturday, Feb. 22. More than 3,800 bare root tree and seedlings will be given out at the event, which will be held at the Mildred Warner Transportation Museum.

Alabaster will be celebrating Arbor Day Saturday by giving away more than 100 trees and smaller saplings to Alabaster residents and businesses. The giveaway will be held at Veterans Park off of Highway 119 in Alabaster.

Registration for the giveaway begins at 8 a.m. The tree giveaway will begin at 9 a.m.

The Birmingham Camellia Society is set to hold its 2nd Annual Local Camellia Show. It runs from Saturday, Feb. 22 through Sunday, Feb. 23.

The society encourages those who attend to bring their outdoor-grown blooms to participate in the show.

The show will be held at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens.

Montevallo will hold its 22nd Annual Arbor Day celebration on Saturday, Feb. 22, at Orr Park Recreation Building.

The celebration begins at 9 a.m. and lasts until 12 p.m.

Birmingham-Southern College will hold an Arbor Day event for students and faculty at the college’s community garden. Those who attend will plant fruit bushes and trees in the BSC community. It lasts from 9 a.m. to noon.

Chelsea will host its 15th Annual Arbor Day celebration at the Chelsea Recreation Park off of Highway 39.

The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22.

Hundreds of seedlings will be given out.
