Navy veteran fired over flag removal

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WIAT) — A Navy veteran is out of a job after removing a tattered American flag from the business where he worked. Rick Heilman says he removed the flag on Monday after reporting its poor condition to management.

Heilman says he served in the military and took a personal offense to them flying a flag in such a poor condition. He admits to being told to leave the issue alone, but he just couldn’t.

“It grated on me all weekend, and I have served 22 years. I have a lot of friends who have fought and died for it. It bothered me all weekend.” -Rick Heilman, Navy Veteran

A spokesperson for Yearwood Equipment says Heilman was not fired for removing the flag but would not comment further.
