FORESTDALE, Ala. (WIAT) — Nearly 100 people gathered in Forestdale Saturday to pick up trash and litter in the area.
State Representative Juandalynn Givan says the county bankruptcy filed in 20-11 caused cuts backs in several areas, including trash pickup.
“It’s just that they don’t have all of the necessary people in place to get the job done on a regular basis, but we’re going to be working on that.” Said Givan.
Some residents say trash is being dumped at their homes.
“Someone took their trash, took their trash to her home, dropped it off so what she decided to do what go into the trash and refuse and when she opened it up, she found the address. She and her husband hauled the trash back to that person’s home.”
Givan, along with Jefferson County Commissioner George Bowman and others are brainstorming on ways to curb the problem.
“We also may need to look at increasing the fines, putting up more no dumping signs, as well as getting the sheriff’s department a little more visible if at all possible.”
