BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A man is in the hospital recovering from a gunshot wound to the chest. The wound stems from a shooting between him and another individual. But police say it sounds like he’s to blame for starting the shooting that occurred in a West Birmingham gas station parking lot, early Monday morning.
The owner of the Shell Station Food Mart tells CBS42, the store was fairly crowded at 2:30 a.m. Monday morning, with about 10 people inside. That’s when they heard shots fired in the parking lot. None of the customers inside were hurt, but outside two people were shot, including the man police say started the altercation.
As for what caused the incident, police say a man was waiting in line to buy cigarettes when another customer started causing trouble. Eventually the man causing trouble left the store. When the man buying cigarettes headed out to the parking lot, the other individual was there waiting for him, with a shotgun. That is when, police say, the man exiting the store pulled out his own gun, and fired first.
Investigators say the man with the shotgun was hit in the chest, but still managed to fire off a few rounds at the other man’s car. The car windows were shattered and the man and his sister, who was sitting inside the car, were both hit. Neither injury is considered serious.
TJ Jones, a regular customer of the gas station, came by just a few hours after the parking lot shootout. He says, hearing about the shooting, it makes you realize that you never know what might happen out there. He also said he’s tired of seeing violence like this in his neighborhood.
“Anybody could have been here and got shot, we just need to stop the violence.” –TJ Jones, customer
Although police are still investigating and talking to everyone involved, making sure they have both sides of the story, they say if the man in the hospital did threaten the other man with a shotgun, then the other man had the right to protect himself.
