Daycare worker arrested for child abuse in Hokes Bluff

HOKES BLUFF, Ala. (WIAT) — Child abuse is tragic – no matter who does it or the age of the children involved.  But when a well-liked day-care teacher is involved in abusing her students – it can be much worse.

Behind the walls at Kid’s Kingdom Daycare in Hokes Bluff is where the alleged abuse took place.

Etowah County Sheriff’s investigators say on Feb. 10, 41-year-old Karen Lynn Rowland verbally abused two 4-year-olds. Then smacked one in the face with a folder and pushed the other’s head into a desk.

The information came to investigators on Feb. 25.

“We were able to obtain video evidence of what happened as well as interviews and statements from folks,” says Chief Deputy Michael Barton.

Barton says right now this appears to have been an isolated incident.  But they are asking for anyone with information about this case or any other’s to contact them.  “We are continuing the investigation in that respect and we definitely encourage anybody that may have additional information that’s not been reported to come forward,” he adds.

A woman answering phones at the daycare declined comment when called, but a parent who declined to go on camera says most parents are shocked by the aggravated abuse charges, calling Rowland a favorite teacher of his children.

One part of the investigation going forward is whether or not daycare employees or the church where it is acted quickly enough under the mandatory reporting guidelines in reporting the abuse to authorities.
