Truck overturns; driver sent to hospital for treatment

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A wreck on I-459 South at Highway 150 sent one person to the hospital for treatment Wednesday afternoon.

Frank Gleason saw the crash happen.

“The truck was flying by in the left lane and was just about ready to hit the vehicles in front of him,” Gleason said. “He couldn’t get slowed down.”

Gleason said a blue pick-up truck swerved into a ditch to get out of the way. Then the speeding box truck hit a silver sedan and then another truck. That’s when the Metro moving truck overturned.

Gleason and several other drivers pulled over to help.

“One guy was holding the door up and someone else tried to help him crawl out from underneath it,” Gleason said. “He crawled and layed right there. He had blood on his face and on his hands and on his left knee.”

Emergency crews took over from there. Gleason said road construction was going on just past Exit 10 on I-459, and that’s why cars and trucks had to slow down fairly quickly.

“I drive trucks all over, I see stuff all the time,” Gleason said. “You don’t usually see an accident happen in front of you. It’s normally after the fact. It just goes to show that you always have to pay attention to what’s going on around you.”

The driver of the overturned truck was taken to UAB Hospital for treatment. No other drivers were injured in the crash.

Traffic on I-459 is clear and all lanes have reopened.
