No change of venue in case of a 9-year-old “run to death”

ETOWAH COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — An Etowah County grandmother accused of killing her own granddaughter will stand trial in June. Despite the media coverage surrounding the case, the trial will not be moved to another county. A judge has denied Joyce Garrard’s request for a change of venue.

Investigators say, in 2012, the 48-year-old Garrard forced her 9-year-old granddaughter, Savannah Hardin, to run around the yard for three hours. It was punishment for eating a candy bar.

Savannah collapsed and later died. The child’s stepmother, Jessica Hardin, is also charged with murder in the case. Prosecutors claim she didn’t do anything to stop what was going on.
