Engineering conference for girls held in Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — About 60 middle school girls took part in this year’s “I Can Girls and Engineering Conference at Alabama Power Saturday.

Organizers say the conference is designed to spark an interest in math and science at a young age.

“Right now, the national average of women in engineering is just under 20% and we believe that in order to increase the number of women with engineering careers we must spark that interest early in their lives,” said Natalie Mills, an environmental engineer and member of the communications team for the conference.

The event sponsored by Girls Inc. of Central Alabama and Alabama Power Company for girls in 6th-8th grades who are interested in science and engineering.  The girls spent the day with female engineers from Alabama Power Company engaging in exciting workshops in various disciplines of engineering and will have the opportunity to participate in an engineering challenge.

This year’s challenge was to create a device that could pour food in a bowl for your pet using only items you would find around the house.
