NEW ORLEANS, La. (WIAT) — What’s Mardi Gras without the beads? Health and environmental experts want to change where we get the popular beads. They say beads from China are made from toxic waste.
And environmentalist fear this waste could end up in our bodies, landfills, and water supply. Toxicologists studied beads from China and found lead and several cancer causing metals and chemicals. The doctors say beads are safer when they are new and more dangerous as they begin to deteriorate over time. They recommend you wash your hands after handling them, and use baby wipes on children’s hands at the parade. Beads should never go in the mouth.
