BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Banks are racing to upgrade their ATM’s before they become prime targets for hackers. This has to do with Windows XP. An estimated 95% of American bank ATM’s run on that operating system.
But Microsoft is killing off tech support for it on April 8th. That means Microsoft won’t issue security updates for Windows XP.
Now, banks are working to replace their fleet. Some of them are cutting special deals with Microsoft to extend their security support. An estimated 200,000 ATM’s in the US run on XP.
