BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – The Barbie doll is introduced and Notorious B.I.G. is murdered in Los Angeles. Plus Alabama adopts an official state song, find out all the details in this edition of, “This Day in History”.

On this day in 1959, the first Barbie doll went on display at the American Toy Fair in New York City. The doll has since gone to sell over 800 million dolls. Coincidentally, Barbie has also had almost as many occupations.

On this day in 1931, Alabama’s House of Representatives adopted the song “Alabama” as the state song.

On this day 1997, Christopher Wallace, better known as the Notorious B.I.G., was shot and killed at a stoplight in Los Angeles. The murder was believed to be part of the ongoing feud between “East Coast” and “West Coast” rap artists. Half a year earlier, rap superstar, Tupac Shakur was killed when he was in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas.

On this day in 1964, the first Ford Mustang was produced.
