Blount Co. law enforcement, coroner file suit against D.A.

BLOUNT COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — Blount County law enforcement and the coroner are battling the district attorney They’ve filed a lawsuit against the district attorney.

The goal is to get a conviction or solve the case, and the coroner plays a critical role in the process.

Now, a judge may decide exactly what that role will be.

Blount County Coroner John Mark Vaughn wants a judge to block a set of guidelines issued by District Attorney Pamela Casey saying what he can or can’t do at crime scenes.

By law, the coroner determines cause of death.

In a criminal investigation, a lab or medical doctor does forensic analysis.

Vaughn says under the new guidelines he cannot perform his job. The list includes barring him from tests, biopsies or samples on a body prior to its arrival at the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences.

The goal is to get a conviction or solve the case, and the coroner plays a critical role in the process.
