Scam Alert: Hackers posing as Verizon Wireless

Verizon scam

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A company posing as Verizon is telling people they can get $54 because they overpaid their bill; but, it’s a scam.  The 1-800-number the call comes from is the official Verizon customer care number. Hackers have the ability to create a spoofed Caller ID. The message directs you to the website: verizon54.com. The site asks for your Verizon Username, password, and credit card information.

“They can create new accounts based on the fact they have sufficient information from you that they can re-create you and can convince other people that they are you.” -Adam Levin, Co-Founder Identity Theft 911

Verizon Wireless says it has shut down the Verizon54 website; but experts warn that scammers will just find new ways to make money.
