MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) – The Alabama Senate has voted to expand the Birmingham Water Works board and add members outside of Birmingham.
The Senate approved a bill by Republican Sen. Jabo Waggoner of Vestavia Hills 20-9 Tuesday evening after cutting off a filibuster by opponents. The bill now goes to the House.
The Birmingham City Council currently appoints the members to the board, which serves parts of five counties. Waggoner’s bill expands the board to add members from the service area outside Birmingham.
Waggoner said the majority of the customers are from outside Birmingham and they deserve a voice. Republican Sen. Rodger Smitherman of Birmingham said the bill is an effort to reduce Birmingham’s influence.
