Local businesses react to ALDOT’s 20/59 plan

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — It’s not a perfect solution, but some people think it’s better than the previous plan.

The initial ALDOT construction proposal for replacing the I-20/59 bridges in downtown Birmingham would have re-routed traffic behind the BJCC to 11th Avenue North. That didn’t sit too well with several businesses. ALDOT has since changed the plan divert traffic onto a 17th street exit ramp instead. Most agree it’s for the better.

Tom Yielding“There are 110 businesses and a lot of great businesses in our neighborhood, and we participated in this process. We let ALDOT know our concerns and we’re very thankful those concerns have been addressed in this new plan. We’re very thankful for that.” –Tom Yielding, Craneworks

ALDOT will continue to take feedback until it’s time to start the building process sometime next year.
