RAGLAND, Ala. (WIAT) — It’s obvious that Matt Byers has a passion for teaching and for making sure his reading students have what they need at school so they’re ready for the future.
“Here at Ragland, we’re a Title 1 school, and sometimes funding is not coming through like we’d like it to,” Byers said. “You know, we do the best we can with what we have, but having $1,000 is an awesome thing so that I can enhance my classroom for the betterment of my students.”
Byers is this week’s recipient of CBS42’s One Class At A Time grant program.
He applied for the grant so he could mount a Smart Board in his classroom at Ragland High School. Byers hopes the board will spark more critical thinking.
However, he doesn’t rely on technology to keep his students interested – from the Thundercats to the Hulk. He also used action figures to connect with his students.
CBS42’s co-sponsors for the One Class At A Time project are Pepsi and America’s First Financial. To apply, click here.
