Diabetes a major health risk in Alabama

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — One of the biggest health risks in Alabama is diabetes.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports Alabama had the highest percentage of adults with diabetes in 2010.

A total of 11 percent of adults in Alabama had diabetes during that year.

Nationally, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) estimates there are more than 25 million diabetics nationwide and almost 80 million with pre-diabetes.

Most people don’t even know they’re at risk.

The association believes one in every three children born after 2000 will develop diabetes at some point.
