Birmingham police officer fires shot at fleeing suspect

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A man is in jail after trying to run from officers late Tuesday night. The man’s attempted escape caused the police to open fire on him. Police believe he had originally fired shots at his girlfriend’s apartment on Parkway East.

An officer then followed the man to the Burger King parking lot near Huffman Road. The driver was told to get out of the car, and police approached the SUV when he refused to exit. After trying to get the man out of the car, police say they had to open fire.

“The individual pulled off in the car with the officer still in the car. Another officer on the other side discharged his firearm because he thought his partner was being ran over by the car. Then after the shotLt. Sean Edwards was fired, the car stopped, the individual stopped driving the car.” –Lt. Sean Edwards, Birmingham Police

Nobody was hurt. The man driving that black SUV is charged with carrying a gun without a permit, and is being questioned for potential further charges.
