One Class At A Time: Oak Mountain Middle School

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — The news team at Oak Mountain Middle School received big news this week. Soon, they’ll have more resources.

Their teacher. Ashli Polizos, is this week’s winner of a $1000 grant as a part of CBS42’s One Class At A Time program.

Polizos says she’ll spend the $1000 grant on upgrading equipment that’s out of date and often unreliable.

“I want to get some new hardware, some new computers and hopefully some software, some editing equipment to make it fun for the kids,” Polizos said.

While the Oak Mountain students are producing a traditional newscast that airs at their school, they’re also trying to keep up with the latest trends and technology by using social media in their reporting.

“I’m hoping that I can kind of capture that excitement and that enthusiasm and find a software program that allows them to use different types of devices to capture the video, and then edit it in a way that is, you know, pretty easy to understand and easy to follow,” said Polizos.

CBS42’s co-sponsors for the One Class At A Time project are Pepsi and America’s First Financial. To apply, click here.
