BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Fourteen years ago the US Postal Service had a total of about 800,000 employees. Now, it’s around 480,000 people get a regular paycheck from the post office. That number is about to drop yet again, but not because of firings or layoffs.
The Postal Service plans to reduce its workforce by 10,000 next year. This will be accomplished by not filling vacant positions and not replacing employees who resign or retire. Cutting Saturday mail delivery is still a possible cost saving measure.
The Postal Service shows a net loss of $354 million for the first three months of 2014.
