Attorney believes Higdon sentence is appropriate

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A teenager was sentenced Tuesday on sex charges and will spend more than 20 years behind bars.

Eric Higdon was convicted on two of eight counts of sodomy in February.

Because of the age of the victims, the minimum sentence he could have receive was 20 years in prison without parole.

CBS42 reached out to Brett Turnbull from the legal firm of Ferris, Riley and Pitt to get his opinion on the charges and the sentence.

“I definitely find that to be an appropriate sentence in this case, just because this young man had no prior convictions,” Turnbull said. “He was a young person, so a 23-year sentence in this circumstance was certainly in a reasonable range.”

Higdon’s family would not go on camera, but they did say Higdon is innocent and they do plan to appeal.
