JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — Sewer bills may get a little lower for Jefferson County residents in the future, all thanks to a $90,000 grant county leaders received from the government.
Commissioner Sandra Little Brown says the county is hoping to use the program to help alleviate the burden of rising sewer rates from customers who already strapped for cash.
Unfortunately, not all cities in the county will qualify for the Homeowner Water Conservation Assistance program.
Hoover, Birmingham and Bessemer are currently exempt, because they all have their own HUD entitlement programs established.
In the meantime, the Department of Community and Economic Development will work with the county sewer department to see who may be experiencing spikes in water bills.
The program kicks off June 1, 2014.
