New property code aims to increase current Birmingham standards

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — The Magic City is more than a century old; and with age, wear and tear is inevitable. In Birmingham’s case that means problems with building and property codes.

The city is working to upgrade its code system. Tuesday the city approved the adoption of the International Property Maintenance Code. The code will ensure that building codes and maintenance codes come into line with one another.

The IPMC will also cover areas that previously were exempt from city codes, such as pools, sidewalks, and driveways.
