BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — The former Carraway Hospital sits in the Norway neighborhood and has been sitting empty since 2008, when the hospital filed for bankruptcy.
Several people have stepped forward with plans to revitalize the building but either the neighborhood rejected the plans or there was no follow-through.
Wednesday, the Birmingham City Council is scheduled to discuss the newest plan for the property. Council member William Parker wants the city to redevelop the property into an office or retail space. It would cost about $40 million.
Councilor Parker has asked his community to contact the Mayor’s office with their support of the proposal. A committee of the whole meeting is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, they are slated to discuss Parker’s plan at 4 PM.
