Suspect charged in Northport shooting

NORTHPORT, Ala — (WIAT) A woman is now charged with attempted murder for a shootout that left another woman hospitalized. CBS 42 was on the scene moments after this story broke.

Hours later, Northport police are still on high alert and the neighborhood is abuzz after this afternoons shooting.  One neighbor says she heard a large group of people fighting and arguing just outside her window. And then gunshots

“The female suspect produced a gun and fired at least twice at the victim,” says Sgt. Dale Phillips of the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office.

The victim was hit twice in the stomach, but she ran across the street and collapsed on a porch in front of a brick apartment building.

“The victim lives in the area,” says Phillips. “Its my understanding that the person we have detained at this time has family in the area but she does not live there.”

The detained person is 29 year old Tanika Johnson.

“She turned herself in,” says Johnson. “She came her. She has known, from when we were at the scene, that we were wanting to talk with her.”

Johnson has now been charged with attempted murder and assault. The victim, 22 year old Tiffany Washington is in stable condition at the hospital.  At this time investigators don’t have a motive for the shooting nor have they recovered the gun. They are also looking to see if a drive by shooting at the victims home Thursday night may be connected to today’s case.
