Attorney wants Wilford to undergo mental evaluation

SHELBY COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — The Shelby County mother accused of killing her 20-month-old son is free on bond Monday night, and it appears she could go through a mental evaluation.

Sommer Wilfford, 22, is charged with reckless murder for the death of Jayden Allen.

Firefighters found the child’s body in the burned out shell of his mother’s car on Feb. 28, 2014.

According to court documents, Wilford’s attorney wants her to undergo a mental evaluation.

A judge also granted the attorney’s request to move her first court appearance from April 2 to May 7.

He claims since Wilford was recently released from jail on Thursday, he needs more time to prepare for the court appearance.
