Convicted sex offender found umpiring girls’ softball games

HUEYTOWN, Ala. (WIAT) — Law enforcement in Jefferson County arrested a convicted sex offender who was found umpiring girls’ softball in Hueytown.

Fred Allen Thomas III, of Hueytown, was arrested on March 22 by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s office spokesman Randy Christian says Hueytown police informed the sheriff’s offices’ Sex Offender Investigations Unit that Thomas was umpiring softball games.

Christian says Thomas was recognized by a parent who reported the discovery to Hueytown police.

Thomas posted $30,000 bond and was released on March 24.

According to court documents, Thomas has been arrested several times and has served time in prison in the past.

Hueytown Fastpitch Softball released a statement on the incident on their Facebook page Tuesday afternoon.

“USSSA has assured me they are in the process of checking all their Alabama sanctioned umpires and this will be something that will be mandatory for all umpires,” they said in the post.

The organization says Thomas was not asked back when they were made aware of his prior sex offender conviction.

CBS42 will continue to provide updates to this developing story as more information becomes available.
