BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — You’ve heard the safety tips before: take your belongings with you and don’t leave your valuables inside your car. But police officers warn none of that matters is you don’t lock your car doors. It sounds like common sense but officers in Homewood, Hoover, Vestavia Hills, and Trussville say they are dealing with a lot of break-ins where the cars weren’t locked.
In fact Vestavia Hills and Trussville report those crimes are on the rise in their areas. Hoover and Vestavia Hills officers also say 80% of the cars break-ins they investigate happened because the cars were unlocked.
Police say most thieves are looking for open doors so if your car is locked and your valuables are out of sight, most thieves will move on in search of an easier target.
