Judge distancing self from bingo raids

EUTAW, Ala. (AP) – A judge is distancing herself from the state’s raids on electronic bingo operations in Greene County.

A district judge in the county, Lillie Jones-Osborne, says in a statement she signed warrants for the raids on orders from the Alabama Supreme Court.

Jones-Osborne says she lives in Greene County and is sad that people are out of work after state officers seized more than 1,000 electronic bingo machines in the west Alabama county.

Officers served search warrants on four bingo operations in Greene County on Monday. The move was the latest in a long-running dispute over the legality of electronic gambling machines in Alabama.

Greene County commissioners are supporting the bingo halls. They say some 1,100 are out of work and public and private groups are losing revenue.
