GULF SHORES, Ala. (WIAT) — They may be a rare find for some, but they are causing worry in others. Thousands of starfish, either dead or dying, are washing onto beaches from Perdido Key to Fort Morgan.
Most of starfish are “brittle” stars, also known as “spider starfish.” They are very common around the world. But the question right now is, why are they washing up on the beaches?
Marine experts say the rough surf is the most likely cause. The strong storms from last weekend probably pushed the starfish over the sandbars and onto the beach.
