GADSDEN, Ala. (WIAT) — Thursday was a big day at R.A. Mitchell School in Gadsden. Students have been honoring Kobe and Xander Barksdale all week with drawings and notes, but Thursday was all about celebrating who they were.
Children at the school are sending up lots of love to Kobe and Xander – from words spoken to memories shared.
“Their little messages are so cute, so sweet, so heartfelt, and they really have been out inspiration,” said school counselor Elaine Piazza.
Xander’s desk was covered with notes from classmates. The inside was left just how he left it.
“Actually, our grieving has turned into a celebration,” Piazza said. “We’re celebrating Kobe and Xander’s lives.”
Second and fourth grade students released balloons Thursday in their honor, with Kobe and Xander’s grandparents standing by.
Piazza says the balloon release wraps up a week of remembering Kobe and Xander.
However, they’re planning something for later in the year to make sure Kobe and Xander are always are part of Mitchell School.
