Scammers posing as Publisher’s Clearing House

Publisher's Clearing House scam

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A lot of people are getting phone calls saying they’ve won millions in the Publisher’s Clearing House Sweepstakes, but if you get one, don’t waste your time. Just hang up the phone, because it’s a scam.

People in North Alabama are getting calls from an (876) area code, which is Jamaica. The caller says you’ve won money and possibly a car; but to claim it, they need you to wire thousands through Western Union as insurance on your prize.

Publisher’s Clearing House doesn’t notify winners by phone. You’ll either receive a check in the mail, or an affidavit for amounts up to $10,000. And of course, there is the well-known prize patrol showing up on your doorstep.
