BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – Heavy rains caused flooding in Central Alabama and prompted an apartment complex to be evacuated. Others in the area have also been evacuated as floodwaters impact the area.

As such, the American Red Cross is opening up three emergency shelters for those in need. The shelters will provide a safe place to stay, a hot meal and minor first aid, the America Red Cross says.

The three shelters are located at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church in Homewood and Helena Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Helena. The Pelham Civic Center is also an active shelter.
