VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. (WIAT) — Heavy rains caused flooding in many parts of Central Alabama Monday morning. On Highway 31 between Shades Crest and Brookwood Hospital, the downpour produced a mudslide.
The cleanup was slow, because the mudslide broke a mudslide on its way down.
Heavy machinery moved the big stuff left behind by the mudslide, while manpower trailed behind them sweeping up the remnants.
A driver called the mudslide in, and while problems on the highway aren’t anything new, the headache caused a new set of issues.
“We’ve had trees come across. In snow events, it’s really dicey going up and down that hill,” said Lt. Gilham “That’s one of the first areas we struggle with, but not a mudslide. Nothing in history. We’ve had a fire on that hillside, but I think this is the first I recall.”
To add some perspective, Gilham has been with the Vestavia Hills Police Department since 1996.
